This is an antique
Joseph Elliot's "Best Silver Steel"
straight razor with a
7/8
inch wide (.84" - .90")
blade
and interestingly repaired black bovine horn scales that are pressed, "Celebrated Razor," on one side and "Universally Approved," on the reverse, inside a border with scallop shells on either side.
The tang is marked,
"
Joseph Elliot, Best Silver Steel
," along with the Elliot
Ↄ + C trademark, used between
1821 and 1854 ("More Old Razors" by Lummus. Antiques, May 1927 p.372-374).
The razor shows some evidence of hone wear. There are no nicks in the cutting edge and it's free of any cracks. The blade has a 3 inch cutting edge and seems to be the original full length. The blade is spotted with
surface rust and pitting
. The scales are cracked on one side and carefully repaired with what looks like handmade brass washers. The blade fits snugly between the scales.
