Offered is this delightful little leek pin, attributed to Martha Sleeper and made circa 1930s-40s.
If you haven't yet heard of Martha Sleeper, this blog post is a good place to start:

She was also featured in this Life Magazine article from 1938, complete with photos of her jewelry:

This pin isn't signed which is common for Martha Sleeper jewelry …usually it can only be identified based on a combination of distinct attributes including age, subject matter, construction methods, and materials used, or, if you're lucky, from old photographs or ads. The Life Magazine article linked above shows a photo of a somewhat similar Martha Sleeper brooch, realistically designed to resemble an onion whereas this pin also looks very onion-y or at least from the onion family -- I think it's a leek because of the little root bits, although it could be a scallion or green onion.
It was carved from catalin or another type of early plastic, realistically detailed and painted in green & creamy white with a little yellow on the tiny root fronds. If you look closely, you can see it was sculpted and painted by hand, two additional features typical for Martha Sleeper, particularly for her early designs, and the simple add-on C clasp mechanism is another feature found on her earlier pieces. I don't know the exact type of plastic because it was finished with a clear resin wash, presumably to protect the paint, so my usual Simichrome test isn't effective due to the resin overcoat. At any rate, it is very cute, a whimsical and unusual design sure to be appreciated by any Martha Sleeper fan or lover of leeks ♡
It measures 2 1/8" at its tallest and 7/8" at its widest and is in excellent condition with minimal signs of age/wear and no notable flaws or damage except for a few missing little root fronds (which you'd never notice unless you used a magnifying glass). The pictures offer the best description, so please click on them for a closer look, and if you have any questions, I'm always happy to help. It comes gift-boxed and ships via USPS ... will be wrapped with care, boxed for safe travel, and mailed within one business day ♡
