Description
This Razor: Produced sometime between 1852 and 1863 by Sheffield cutler C. T. Bingham, this beauteous classic 13/16" cut-throat razor
possesses
an early mid-19th century style with a wide-notched tip, true heavy grind and beautiful clear trademark stamping. It is stamped on the tang, "Tally Ho, C T Bingham, Late Fenney, Sheffield" with a nicely detailed tang stamp of a running fox.
These old Tally Ho razors were so popularly used that after cutler Frederick Fenney's death in 1852, Bingham purchased the rights to his trademarks in order to capitalize their marketing power. Later, in 1863, Bingham relinquished the Tally Ho trademark to George Wostenholm, just across the street.
The Work:
I refurbished this blade by unpinning it, removing all rust, carefully polishing it to a nice sheen. I made beefy custom scales from honey blond water buffalo horn possessing a subtle medial ridge which not only lends strength but also highlights the color of the horn in a pleasing way. Some significant pitting remains on the blade as I did not want to compromise the spirit and essence of the razor. I put it back together with original steel bullseye pin-covers and brass pins. It retained its original lead wedge-spacer. Please scrutinize the photos for details. 160+ years old and still going strong, ready to serve several more generations!
This razor has a nice feel in the hand and has been honed as detailed below.
My Story
: I fell in love with vintage straight razors some years back when I became irritated with the exorbitant cost of disposable razor cartridges. I taught myself to refurbish antique straight razors, utilizing my background in jewelry and sculpture in learning to make custom razor scales, to pin them properly,
and, through great effort and dedication, have gained a reputation for nicely honed shaving edges
. Each of these blades is a journey, with a history. A man's hands created it long ago to last for generations. You and I are part of those generations. I try to be sensitive and cognizant of the historical context of each razor, as well as the spirit and intentions of the original blademaker so that I may bring them back to life for you, my customer.
I honed this razor with great care, as I would for my own razors I use for personal daily use
this razor was honed with the following progression with two layers of tape to protect the spine. It will be sanitized with Clippercide prior to shipping:
