Description
This Razor: This is an awesome early 19th century 6/8ths width wedgy grind cutthroat straight razor originally soldmost likely sometime between 1805 and 1820
by larger-than-life Sheffield personality and perfumer George Packwood. Packwood was famous for his witty advertising, as well as the quality of the items he sold. This razor has vintage streaky dark horn scales with brass pin covers and pins and a beefy lead wedge spacer. It has a nice wide a barbers notch typical of that era. Other clues that indicate its early status are the stamps "Patent Steel" and "Warranted" and the fact that Packwood died in 1811. We know that his wife and heirs only operated the business for a fairly short period after his passing.
George Packwood does not appear in Tweedale's Directory of Sheffield Cutlery Manufacturers because he was primarily known as a perfumer and for the strops he sold. His blades were produced by various highly talented early 19th century Sheffield cutlers, we don't know exactly by whom. In my experience, these blades never disappoint. The steel is wonderful and the blades feel great in the hand and on the face. I tested this razor on a 7-day beard and received a very nice 1-pass shave. I will re-strop and sanitize the razor with Clippercide before shipping.
The Work: I refurbished this blade by unpinning it, removing all rust, carefully polishing it to a nice sheen. I cleaned and polished the horn scales. There is residual pitting on the blade. I re-pinned the pivot using wide interior brass washers to help stabilize the pivot and reduce wear over time. Please scrutinize the photos for details. 200+ years old and still going strong, ready to serve several more generations!
It is honed With 2 layers of tape on the spine, as detailed below.

My Story: I fell in love with vintage straight razors some years back when I became irritated with the exorbitant cost of disposable razor cartridges. I taught myself to refurbish antique straight razors, utilizing my background in jewelry and sculpture in learning to make custom razor scales, to pin them properly,
and, through great effort and dedication, have gained a reputation for nicely honed shaving edges
. Each of these blades is a journey, with a history. A man's hands created it long ago to last for generations. You and I are part of those generations. I try to be sensitive and cognizant of the historical context of each razor, as well as the spirit and intentions of the original blademaker so that I may bring them back to life for you, my customer.
