Description
Antique Straight Razor DORP KING J.P. Alcamist With Original Box-Made in Germany. Extremely rare excellent used condition razor with original box made in Germany. Tang marked "DORP KING", reverse says "J. P. Alcamisi, Schenectady N. Y., M. I. Germany". A razor listing isn't the place for a long discussion of the history of New Amsterdam but briefly, the settlement of Schenectady was known by many names, one of which was "Dorp", or "The Dorp", a Dutch word for village. That individual depicted on the brass bolsters with a headdress may have been an Iriquois, but a local history professor with an interest in the Mohawk Valley (he's of Dutch descent) thinks the Schenectady barber supplier may have had this razor made to honor a Dorpian named Claes van der Volgen, a young man who survived the massacre of 1690 and went to Canada and was adopted by the tribe and lived much of his life as an Indian, before returning home and living out the rest of his days as a famous citizen.
