This is an
antique
Wade & Butcher
"Celebrated Washington Razor" straight razor
with
an etched
13/16" wide
(.82" - .85")
blade
and
pressed and gilded
translucent bovine horn scale
s. The blade has a rare etch with a portrait of George Washington inside a round frame marked, "Washington Razor." To Washington's right is an eagle with outstretched wings holding a banner in its beak that says, "The Home of the Free." To Washington's left is a winged cherub holding a banner that reads, "America, Home of the Brave."
The etching is still quite legible. The scales are marked, "The Celebrated Washington Razor," along with an eagle on the right and an American flag and shield on the left.
The razor's tang is marked, "Manufactured by
Wade & Butcher, Sheffield," along with the Wade & Butcher trademark.
The blade
shows little evidence of hone wear. T
here are no nicks in the cutting edge, and it's free of any cracks.
The blade has a 3 inch cutting edge and seems to be the original full length. The blade is spotted with surface rust and pitting. The scales aren’t warped, and they aren't cracked but there are several chips in the reverse side of the scales (see pictures).
The blade fits snugly between the scales.
