This is an early Elliot
straight razor, probably manufactured in the late 1700s or early 1800s, based on the razor's
short
stub-tail
.
The razor has
a wide, heavy 15/16" wide
(.87" - .98")
wedge blade
. The scales are made of
bovine bone with
the original domed brass washers
and embellished on both sides with a scored and inked pattern.
The razor's tang is marked, "Elliot
."
The blade
shows some evidence of hone wear. T
here are no nicks in the cutting edge and it's free of any cracks.
The blade has a long 3.16 inch cutting edge and seems to be the original full length. The blade is spotted with surface rust and pitting. The scales aren’t warped, but there's a small split on one side of the scales at the toe (see pictures)
. The blade fits snugly between the scales.
The razor comes in a old coffin box that's decorated in an unusual wavy combed pattern.
