Nicholas Watt's notes on the painting's subject:
"Few individuals in the history of motor racing are as beloved as the late, great
Gilles Villeneuve.  His brash driving style, always on the ragged edge, earned him legions of admirers around the world.  On October 8, 1978, driving a Ferrari 312T3, Villeneuve scored his first Grand Prix triumph in front of a home crowd on the new Ille Notre Dame circuit in Montreal.  On the podium, an emotional Villeneuve accepted the laurels of victory from Canadian Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau.  After his death in 1982, the Ille Notre Dame circuit was renamed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. "
