In 1884, Albert Teagarden started a company in Austin, Texas. In 1895, Joseph Shumate became a partner and the company became Teagarden and Shumate. The firm first dealt in cutlery about 1900 but in 1904 the company moved to St. Louis and became the Shumate Razor Company. The trademark "Shumate Razor Co. St. Louis." was used between 1904 and 1920. The trademark "Shumate Cutlery Corp., St. Louis." was used from 1920 to 1932.
